Step-by-Step Paver Installation Guide

Please note that the actual installation may vary based on the scope of the work, the condition of the property, and any unforeseen challenges that may arise to ensure a successful installation.

Step #1: Preparation and Excavation

Just like creating a work of art starts with a blank canvas, the paver installation process begins the same way.

1. First, we excavate any unsuitable material, such as soft or unstable soil, in the area where we will be laying the pavers.
2. Next comes the base, typically a material like Class II Road Base. The thickness of this base is critical and depends on the intended use of the surface (e.g., thicker for a driveway than a walkway).
3. Finally, the base is then carefully compacted, leveled, and sloped slightly for proper drainage and to prevent water pooling.

Step #2: Bedding Sand Installation

A one-inch layer of clean, sharp masonry sand is installed over the compacted base. This bedding sand is essential for providing a uniform and level surface for the pavers. It's carefully leveled using a 'screeding' technique to create a perfectly flat and smooth surface. It requires a high level of precision and skill to ensure the surface is perfectly flat and smooth before installing the pavers.

Step #3: Edge Restraint

To prevent the pavers and the bedding sand from shifting or moving, an edge restraint is installed. This is typically an existing hard edge, like a curb or driveway edge, but a polyethylene or poured concrete restraint can be added if necessary. This step is essential for ensuring the long-term stability and integrity of the paver installation.

Step 4: Paver Laying

With the foundation and edges in place, we begin the meticulous process of laying the pavers directly on the bedding sand. It is done in a forward motion, starting from a corner. The pavers are placed flat, without tilting, and kept hand-tight to maintain proper spacing. A string line is often used to ensure all the pieces are straight.

Step 5: Compacting

After the pavers are laid, a plate compactor compacts the entire surface. The reason is two-fold: it sets the pavers into the bedding sand and begins the interlocking process. Then, joint sand is spread evenly over the surface. The plate compactor is then used again to push the sand down and into the voids between the pavers, fully locking them into place.

Step 6: Paver Sealing

The final step of the paver installation process is the application of paver sealer. Sealing protects the pavers from stains, locks in their vibrant color, and adds a layer of defense against the elements, ensuring the pavers keep looking like new for years to come.
